With “Lemon Cello”, Dunkelbunt composes a “Chanson Electronique”. Sonically situated somewhere between Vienna and Paris, rhythmically an homage to the dormant dance and club culture. The longing is audible.
“Tout le monde est lá, embrasse moi, en va fêter ça!” which means roughly: All the world is there, embrace me and that’s what we are celebrating! With these words the singer Lisa Cantabile evokes the current zeitgeist.
DJ and producer Ulf Lindemann uses the original theme of “Ideocello” – a song from the cello-accordion duo Marie Spaemann and Christian Bakanic – as an harmonic substructure, from which he weaves a Dunkelbunt sound tapestry par excellence.

Die Release “The Vienna Tapes – limited edition” versammelt 13 ausgewählte [dunkelbunt]-Tracks aus den Jahren 2015-2019. Es ist das Album eines mentalen und musikalischen Aufbruchs in den nahen und den zunehmend fernen Osten: Die Reise geht dabei vom Balkan über den Maghreb und Kenia in den arabischen Nahen Osten und dann nach Indien.
Die “Vienna Tapes” entstanden im [dunkelbunt]-Studio im zweiten Wiener Gemeindebezirk und schöpfen wesentlich aus dem Pool internationaler MusikerInnen der Stadt: Alix , der Berliner MC als textlicher und performativer Prachtkerl; die südindische Sängerin Anuradha Genrich sowie die Jazz-Singer/Songwriterinnen Lisa Cantabile und Mela Marie Spaemann; der Rapper Cloud Tissa aus Kenia und der marokkanische Raï-Sänger Kadero Rai; schließlich die aus Rajasthan stammenden Brüder Haider und Pintoo Khan als fulminante Sänger und Perkussionisten … –

The release “The Vienna Tapes (limited edition)” brings together thirteen selected [dunkelbunt] recordings of the years 2015-2019. It is the album of a mental and musical awakening in the realms of the Near and Far East: The journey takes off from the Balkans to the Maghreb and Kenya to the Arab Middle East (then ultimately to India.
“The Vienna Tapes” were recorded at the [dunkelbunt] studio in Vienna and draw substantially from the pool of international and globally active musicians in town: Alix, the Berlin MC; South Indian singer Anuradha Genrich; jazz singer-songwriters Lisa Cantabile and Mela Marie Spaemann; rapper Cloud Tissa from Kenya; Moroccan Raï singer Kadero Rai; Rajasthan-born singers and percussionists Haider & Pintoo Khan…
I am drawn ever more into the vortex of these musical worlds, and with the album release of “Vienna Tapes”, I cast the first stone into a raging stream, which I am calling the “Exodus Complex”.

“Balkan to Bollywood”, die traditionelle [dunkelbunt] Club-Nacht erobert ab November nun auch das Fanialive mit seinem neuen Format, der Kombination aus Live-Session und DJ-Party. Mit an Bord sind diesmal die südindische Sängerin Anuradha Genrich, der Sänger und Perkussionist Haider Khan aus Rajasthan, der Sänger und Perkussionist Redouan Bariane aus Marokko, der lange in Marseille ansässige DJ Woxow (Theo Melody) sowie Ulf [dunkelbunt] Lindemann (keys, electronics).
Gute Bilanzen
Mit 11 Alben und mehr als zwei Dutzend Single- und EP-Veröffentlichungen, mit weltweit mehr als 1.500 Live-Auftritten (als DJ und mit Band) kann [dunkelbunt], der mit bürgerlichem Namen Ulf Lindemann heißt und der heute mit seiner Familie im zweiten Bezirk lebt, auf eine stolze Bilanz als fleißiger und umtriebiger Musiker zurückblicken. Der Markt für den Verkauf und Vertrieb von Musik hat sich in diesen vergangenen 20 Jahren freilich fundamental verändert, denn Musik wird heute weitgehend digital verkauft und verbreitet. So ist es die Anzahl der “Streams”, die heutzutage zählt und die lässt sich für das international aktive Projekt [dunkelbunt] auf etwa 100 Millionen bemessen, wenn man die Abspielraten von Plattformen wie Spotify, YouTube, i-tunes und Soundcloud zusammenrechnet.
Analog again – mit Audio-Cassette
Für Ulf Lindemann bleibt aber das gute alte “analoge” Musizieren – die lebendige und befruchtende Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Musikern, das Bühnenerlebnis und die Begegnung mit “echten und leibhaftigen” Zuhörern und Fans – im Zentrum des Interesses, weshalb er in den kommenden Wochen nicht nur mehrere Live-Auftritte in Wien absolviert (Fanialive, Nuu, Rote Bar im Volkstheater), sondern auch sein neues Album in analoger Form veröffentlicht: “Vienna Tapes – limited edition” erscheint im Dezember und zwar ganz bewusst im Retro-Format einer Audio-Kassette. “Ich freue mich, darauf, die Tapes persönlich zu gestalten, in die Hand zu nehmen und für meine Hörer verpacken zu können”, sagt Lindemann, der seine frühen Mixes noch auf Kassetten zusammengestellt und an Freunde verteilt hat: “Ich stelle mir vor, wie die Leute in ihren Haushalten nach ihren alten Kassetten-Recordern suchen oder wie sie sich zu Hörgemeinschaften zusammenfinden…” – Es ist freilich eine Retro-Geste mit einigem Augenzwinkern, denn natürlich werden die Songs der “Vienna Tapes” auch digital zu hören sein.
Neue Reihe in 1080
Zur analogen Experience gehört allerdings auch, eine regelmäßige eigene Clubnacht in Wien zu haben und damit einen Ort der kontinuierlichen Begegnung zu schaffen. Dies wird – neben den vierteljährlichen [dunkelbunt]-Parties im “fluc” am Praterstern – von nun auch im “Fanialive” (Gürtelbögen Josefstadt) geschehen: Einmal im Monat gastiert Lindemann dort als DJ wie auch als Live-Musiker mit internationalen Musikern und DJ-Kollegen. “Musik ist etwas Lebendiges”, meint Lindemann, “und man kann das Feuer nur auf dem Wege der ständigen Erneuerung und Herausforderung am Leben erhalten”. – Und für Lebendigkeit steht der bewährte internationale Tanzclub “Fanialive” ganz gewiss!

Alix’s “Weit Weg” (Far Away) is the slogan and the motif of my new production, which got a kick-start with “Wish” during the refugee crisis of 2015/16. So in any one song the instruments of a european settler in a covered wagon heading to the west coast can be heard along with the chinese workers of the transcontinental railroad. The pipa and the ehru (the chinese lute and violin) blends with a greek bouzouki, slide guitar and banjo with oriental strings.

With this release [dunkelbunt] & Alix demonstrate their boundless ingenuity, when it comes to making transcontinental music: “EGAL” mixes Hip Hop with Bluegrass, German rap meets New Orleans Marching Brass and the sounds of the Mississippi Delta sail on the Aegean Sea.
On the mic is Alexander Leuschner aka Alix. Born in 1988 and a native of Berlin’s Neukölln suburb, he’s been rapping using various vocal styles from a young age. Rhythmically refined he he bounces on the verses, thoughtfully and humorously talking about life and his visions. Together with [dunkelbunt] he shares his adopted home of Vienna and a passion for merging different musical styles.
Ulf Lindemann aka [dunkelbunt] was born in Hamburg in 1979. At the beginning of the millennium in his Vienna studio, he began to merge electronic music with Balkan, Gypsy and Swing sounds and along with his contemporaries like Waldeck, Parov Stelar and Shantel who helped popularize the new music genres, „Electro Swing“ and „Balkan Beats“.

Nach längerer Wartezeit legt Waldeck seinen mit Spannung erwarteten vierten Longplayer “Rio Grande” vor… Und soviel vorweg: Das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Der Titel ist Programm: Zwar klingen in “Rio Grande” noch Elemente des über 100.000-fach verkauften Vorgängeralbum “Ballroom Stories” nach, doch die Reise geht in das Grenzgebiet des Rio Grande, dort wo sich Western Style, Blues, Dub und karibische Elemente die Hand reichen. Begleitet wird Waldeck dabei von seinen kongenialen Sängerinnen, der aus den Westindies stammenden Joy Malcolm (zuletzt unterwegs mit Moby) und der Vorarlbergerin Zeebee. Waldecks Sound wirkt auf “Rio Grande” pur und befreit von ornamentaler Elektronik. Uns erwarten bluesige Gesänge, schmachtende Trompeten, Lagerfeuerromantik und obszöne Tanzeinlagen in verruchten Saloons. John Wayne trifft auch El Mariachi. “Hugh” der große Waldeck hat gesprochen!

In ihrem Singer/ Songwriter Projekt „Mela“ greift Marie Spaemann in die Soulkiste, zeigt ihre Liebe zum Jazz, lässt sich von Popbrisen treiben und von ihrem ursprünglich klassischen Background inspirieren. Mit ihrer ersten EP „The Moony Sessions“ taucht die Cellistin in bannende Klangwelten ein und verführt zum Träumen. Live, als One Woman Band, nutzt Mela ihr Instrument mit Hilfe einer Loop Station in all seiner Vielseitigkeit. New Album: “Ich grill mit Dir die Abendsonne”, ft. Boban i Marko Markovic Orkestar, Savages y Suefo, Barefoot Basement, Anduze, Alix

“My passion is creating beats. Not necessarily in the studio but in more magical places, a log cabin hidden between snow capped mountain tops, with a warm cockle stove and a picture postcard view of the magical winter wonderland lying outside. In an aeroplane flying 12,000 meters over the Mediterranean sea towards Tel Aviv, on a farm in the evening after the olive harvest or somewhere in Andalusia in the valleys of almond blossoms.
The finishing touches and subtle flavors are then added in my studio in Vienna with my spice laden effectsboard and sub end. My studio is also the space where I create my blend of „mixed spices“. There are always lots of various herbs and spices to be found, from aniseed to z’atar which gives this space an intoxicating fragrance and allure. Normally I work parallel with three „non materials“, sound, smell and taste. Constantly moving back and forth, between a mortar & pestle, synthesizers, a wooden spoon and the mixing desk, alternating between blocking my ears, closing my mouth and blocking my nose in an attempt to find the fragrance emanating from the pictures of my fantasy, to paint with sounds and music, and taste and smell the melodies.
Everything breaks down into frequencies and aligns itself towards the golden rule. I know it sounds crazy but it’s just a part of my day to day: alchemy in the [dunkelbunt] Studio. Often my daughters enter my „soundkitchen“ and remix the settings on my analogue synth, record over sounds and announce that my wobble bass purrs like a kitten….what more could I ask for?”
The title track „Ich grill mir Dir die Abendsonne“ (With you I’ll grill the evening sun) is a homage to the Mediterranean, We sail into the setting sun onboard a spice freighter filled with beats and bass, a greek bouzouki, accordion and balkan violin, flamenco guitars, Arabic saz and a Turkish Oud…
During the making of this EP numerous attractive collaborations emerged, the title „Augen zu und durch“ is the starting point for the new [dunkelbunt] album „Boomerang“, where I will be recording with the Berlin rapper and singer „Alexander Leuschner“ aka Alix and instrumentally supported by the viennese band „Barefoot Basement“. One week before the end of recording for this EP I was contacted by the soul ‘n’ funk singer Lee Anduze from Los Angeles (who has worked with Parov Stelar among others). Based on „Augen zu und durch“, Anduze wrote the lyrics for „Smoking Gun“ and hunted me down from across the pond so that we could work on some new beats at his place in L.A. during my US tour in September.
On top of that we have two remixes on board, Boban I Marko Markovic Orkestra’s „Šljivovica“ and Savages Y Suefo’s “Ballroom Breakers” both dressed in [dunkelbunt]-Wobblebass-Balkan-Swing-Costume.
