Radeln hält die Wadln stramm. Im Sommer 2004 setzt sich der DJ und Produzent Ulf Lindemann a.k.a. [dunkelbunt] auf sein Fahrrad und fährt von Wien nach Istanbul. Für einen alten Pfadfinder kein Problem. Eine Landkarte braucht man keine. Auf die Donausinsel schafft es jeder und bis zum Schwarzen Meer folgt man einfach dem großen Strom.Der Grund für diese Reise war seine, in Wien entflammte, Liebe zur Musik der Balkanländer.
Heute gilt [dunkelbunt] als einer der vielleicht wichtgisten Global Beat Troubadoure des neuen Millenium. Spielt Gigs in den Townships von Johannesburg bis zu den High Society Clubs in Hollywood. War jahrelang Resident DJ im legendären Wiener „Ost Klub“ sowie dem New Yorker Pendant „Mehanata“ in Downtown Manhattan. Über Jahre tourt er um die Welt, spielt in allen großen Metropolen und verbreitet unermüdlich seinen Sound. Zwischenzeitlich lebt er auf Hawaii, in Andalusien und Istanbul, schafft ein weltweites Netzwerks aus gleichgesinnten Musikern und DJ’s und gründet 2010 sein eigenes Label. Auf sein Konto gehen der frühe Electro Swing, Balkan Beat und Global Bass. Seine Band wuchtet derzeit fünfzehn verschiedene Sprachen auf die Bühne.
In den letzten drei Wochen habe ich unter dem Motto AKKORDE IM MUND, fünfzehn verschiedene Gewürzmischungen nach eigenen Rezepturen hergestellt (Details s.u.) und lade Euch nun zu einem ADVENTS-GEWÜRZ-BASAR ein.
97% der Rohgewürze stammen dabei aus biologischem Anbau. Die Mischungen eignen sich für viele verschiedene Gerichte aus aller Welt und decken alle Schwierigkeitsgrade in der Kochkunst ab. So gibt es z.B. auch einfache Rezepturen, wie Rosensalz oder Pfeffermischungen für die Mühle, aber auch Curries und Masalas mit bis zu dreißig verschiedenen Zutaten.
Die Preise der Gläser und Beutelchen bewegen sich zwischen 4€ und 9€. Ausserdem gibts natürlich VINYL, CDs, Wein, Schwedenkräuter und Tshirts aus dem Hause [dunkelbunt] UND einige exklusive Räritäten, die wir aus dem kommerziellen Handel zurückgezogen haben. (z.B. Cinnamon Girl Vinyl)

Wir machen aus der Not eine Tugend und schunkeln euch direkt aus dem Sendesaal des RadioKulturhauses in die nächste musikalische Dimension!
Wir freuen uns besonders darauf alle Solisten mit dabei zu haben, die jemals bei uns an Bord waren, außerdem Pintoo & Haider Khan ft Iqbal. Wir wuchten mindestens fünfzehn Sprachen auf die Bühne, spielen die alten Hits, sowie ofenfrisches Ohrfutter UND es bleibt viel Platz für Improvisation und neuen Sound, den wir erst auf der Bühne entstehen lassen… Es könnte eines der interessantesten [dunkelbunt] Konzerte der Geschichte werden…
Theoretisch handelt es sich um eine bestuhlte Veranstaltung (ich liebe dieses Wort) und so spielen wir das erste Mal in unserer Bandgeschichte für ein sitzendes Publikum, denn so ist die Auflage im denkmalgeschützten Sendesaal des ORF. Also Leute, schön brav sein, lasst die harten SubsTanzen zuhause, nicht zu viel Extase sonst muss der ORF noch Vergnügungssteuer an die AKM abdrücken…

For his new single WISH, [dunkelbunt] teams up with San Francisco based musicians Will Magid (trumpet) & Paul Bertin (saxophone), Viennese singer Mela and MC Alix from Berlin.
Together they have created a mystic sound collage, enriched with instruments from various countries. The Middle East meets the Californian Bass Coast.

merges the diverse sounds of Europes “Wild East” with Bluegrass and Hillbilly from the American pioneers of the old “Wild West”. Sounds of the world mixed with electronic, modern club music and bass heavy beats.
[dunkelbunt]’s new album “Mountain Jumper” is an echo of his travels and also a very personal epic journey which along with the music paints various pictures/landscapes. “Electronic music is the foundation which the sounds of the world sit upon. I’m facinated with creating a relationship between sounds that no one has ever heard. There are components from a wide variety of music styles and experiences from my life travels. The natural sounds I recorded while in Hawaii or in Spain together with the musical memories from my time as a Boy Scout traveling in Ireland and Sweden.”
[dunkelbunt] takes the diverse sounds of various local cultures and mixes them with electronic, modern club sounds and bass beats. “I’m inspired by the fact that so many people with different backgrounds all came together on one continent in such a short period of time. It’s an amazing musical melting pot, the land of unlimited musical possibilities. I have toyed with the idea of using bluegrass, hillbilly and country styles in my music for years thus giving it a more global and electronic context.“

VIENNALIZM! is [dunkelbunt] and KADENZA´s new club night, in the heart of Vienna in the chic cool ambience of the ROTE BAR in Vienna’s Volkstheater. The idea is simple, a collective EARGASM! Anything that grooves and opens hearts and awakens spirits is welcome. Mr. [dunkelbunt] teams up with the urban cosmopolites of Vienna: Well-known DJs like WALDECK and MARX WEST aka SID DATA (ex-Program Director of Ostklub) will share the decks with far-travelled people from Syria, Afghanistan, Subsaharian Africa („BOCK AUF KREATIVITÄT“). Old hands play old skool with nostalgically cracking vinyl meeting the new skool, refugees streaming the music of their turmoil-ridden countries via smartphones to the sound system. One thing is certain, this adventure will take you on a trip around the world with the main aim being musical variety and dancing, the likes of which this city has never seen before!
Ulf Lindemann alias Dunkelbunt tourt um die Welt: Mit Balkan-Beats und Elektro-Swing war er in Tel Aviv, Moskau und Honolulu. Zur Datscha-Party in seiner Heimatstadt Hamburg kam das Publikum aber nicht gleich in Schwung. Von Claudia Hammermüller.
Mit geschlossenen Augen sitzt Ulf »Dunkelbunt« Lindemann am Keyboard. Fast versteckt spielt er auf der großen Bühne, lächelt ab und zu, als wäre er tief in Gedanken. Auf dem Podest im hinteren Teil der Bühne fällt er fast nicht auf. Zuerst ziehen die vier anderen Musiker die Blicke auf sich: Dunkelbunt swingt und balkanbeatet an diesem Abend zusammen mit dem Berliner Hip-Hopper Alix, der Cellistin und Sängerin Marie Spaemann, dem Gitarristen und Sänger Florian Tavernier sowie Erhan Mamudoski für Klarinette und Saxophon.
Noch bevor Dunkelbunt auf die Bühne kommt, stimmt Marie Spaemann mit ihrer Soulstimme schnörkellos-schön-beschwingt in die Nacht ein. Als die Cellistin mit ihrem Singer-Songwriter-Projekt Mela gegen 22 Uhr beginnt, füllt sich das »Uebel & Gefährlich« allerdings noch. Ob es am Hamburger Schietwetter oder am Fahrstuhl liegt, mit dem die Besucher nur grüppchenweise in den Club gelangen – wer weiß. Schade auf jeden Fall.
Dunkelbunts Musik ist vielseitig: Balkanklänge, Reggae, Swing, HipHop – eine gelungene Mischung. Das Hamburger Publikum ist allerdings nicht sofort zu überzeugen. Dabei lässt Hip-Hopper und Rampensau Alix nichts unversucht, dem Publikum einzuheizen: Er tanzt in bester Balkan-Manier, animiert mit »Jump! Jump! Jump!«-Rufen und schwenkt die Arme in der Luft. Spätestens nach dem Sirtaki ist dann auch das Publikum in bester Balkan-Partystimmung. Einige fühlen sich sogar zum Crowdsurfing ermuntert.
»Vor 14 Jahren ging ich von Hamburg nach Wien. Dort wurde ich nicht nur zum Schlawiener, sondern lernte auch den Balkan kennen,« meldet sich Dunkelbunt in feinstem Hamburger Schnack zu Wort. Die neuen Einflüsse zeigten sich auch bald in seiner Arbeit: In seinem Studio begann er, elektronische Musik mit Balkanklängen zu mischen. Seitdem prägt er in verschiedenen Projekten unter anderem mit Parov Stelar und den 17 Hippies Balkan-Beats und Elektroswing.
Sein im März 2015 erschienenes Album »Mountain Jumper« ist das erste Mal überwiegend deutschsprachig, sonst ist Dunkelbunt eher multilingual unterwegs. »EGAL« besingt das Credo des Musikers: »Es ist egal, wo du herkommst und auch egal, wohin du gehst, solange du dem Weg deines Herzens folgst und dafür gerade stehst.« Mit der Ansage »Refugees Welcome« ordnet Alix den Song an diesem Abend auch eindeutig politisch ein. Und das Publikum fordert gleich zwei Zugaben – es bekommt sie auch. Am Ende des Konzerts tanzt selbst »Mr. Dunkelbunt he himself und Hamburger Jung«, wie Alix ihn verabschiedet, hinter seinem Keyboard.

Nach ausverkauften Shows in London, Madrid, dem Wiener Konzerthaus oder Gasometer hat [dunkelbunt] kurzerhand entschlossen, ein Zusatzkonzert im Chaya Fuera zu geben, bevor es weitergeht nach Kapstadt, Berlin, Warschau und Melbourne.
Neben dem neuen Album “Mountain Jumper” präsentiert Ulf Lindemann auch seine jüngsten Gewürzmischungen, die es vor und nach dem Konzert zu kosten gibt: Liquid Lava, Chimi Churi, Lemonizer, u.v.m. Akkorde im Mund – ein Picknick mit [dunkelbunt], abgerundet mit den Weinen des südsteirischen Winzers Simon Engel.
Local support von MELA, deren Stimme auch auf [dunkelbunt]’s neuen Album zu hören ist (The River/N.D.W.). Sie präsentiert an diesem Abend ihr kürzlich auf Vinyl erschienenes Album “The Moony Session”.

Seit über zehn Jahren steht ULF LINDEMANN alias [dunkelbunt] zusammen mit Genre-Kollegen wie WALDECK, PAROV STELAR oder SHANTEL als Pionier für die elegante Fusion von osteuropäischen Sounds mit modernen Beats im Electro-Swing Gewand. Der weit gereiste Musiker bringt in seinen Tracks eine enorme Vielfalt an musikalischen Einflüssen unter, vom Hip Hop, Electro und Jazz kommend, erschafft er wohlig warme Sounds, einen wahren Klangfarbenzauber auf geschmackvoll satt groovenden Beats.
Nach seinen Alben „Morgenlandfahrt“ (2007) und „Picnic with [dunkelbunt]“ (2012) sowie den beiden erfolgreichen „Sun Dub“-Compilations meldet sich [dunkelbunt] mit „Mountain Jumper“ endlich zurück. Beeinflusst durch seine bisher sieben Nordamerika-Touren rücken jetzt neue Flavours in den gewohnt stilsicheren Klangkosmos ein: Bluegrass, Hillbilly und Country, die Sounds der Siedler im „Wilden Westen“ zur Gründerzeit der USA hinterlassen Spuren auf den Clubsounds- und Beats. Dabei kommen Field Recordings oder Instrumente wie Slide Guitar, Geige und Banjo, aber auch Pipa und Erhu (chinesische Laute und Geige) sowie griechischer Bouzouki zum Einsatz.
Die 13 stimmungsvollen Tracks enthalten aber auch gewohnte Elemente wie deutschsprachige Raps und das stets durchschimmernde Electro-Swing-Fundament. „Mountain Jumper“ ist eine behutsame Erweiterung des [dunkelbunt]-Universums in neue Richtungen, mit allen Vorzügen, für die man den individualistischen Soundtüftler zu recht so schätzt.

In ihrem Singer/ Songwriter Projekt „Mela“ greift Marie Spaemann in die Soulkiste, zeigt ihre Liebe zum Jazz, lässt sich von Popbrisen treiben und von ihrem ursprünglich klassischen Backround inspirieren.
Mit ihrer ersten EP, „The Moony Sessions“, taucht die Cellistin in bannende Klangwelten ein und verführt zum Träumen.
Live, als One Woman Band, nutzt Mela ihr Instrument mit Hilfe einer Loop Station in all seiner Vielseitigkeit. Die Konzertcellistin hier zurücknehmend, lässt sie facettenreich Begleitungen entstehen, die den Boden für ihren soulig verspielten Gesang ebnen.

In den 1990ern bist du nach Wien gezogen. Deine Musik war damals sehr von Kruder & Dorfmeister und Vienna Scientists beeinflusst. Welche österreichischen Musiker wirken heute auf dich?
Bevor ich nach Österreich kam, hörte ich auch K & D, das war aber mit meinem Umzug schlagartig vorbei. Denn in Wien lernte ich die Balkan Musik kennen. Also nicht unbedingt österreichische Musik, sondern in Wien praktizierte Musik und lebende Musiker. Harry Stojka, Tschuschenkapelle, Fabian Pollack, Walter Soyka, Otto Lechner, Barefoot Basement usw. Und jetzt ganz aktuell Marie Spaemann a.k.a. MELA.
Der Song “NDW” entstand schon vor 16 Jahren. Warum ist er erst jetzt auf “Mountain Jumper” zu hören?
NDW schrieb ich noch zur Schulzeit – schwänzte Deutschstunden, wo wir gerade das Buch “Nathan der Weise” lasen. Dafür steht NDW. Ich weiß heute nicht mehr was in mich gefahren war. Bei der Klassenarbeit schrieb ich die Partitur ins Heft und bekam eine sechs dafür. Ein paar Jahre später reichte ich die Partitur, bei der Aufnahmeprüfung zum Klavierstudium an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst als theoretischen Teil ein und wurde zugelassen. Danach geriet der Song bei mir in Vergessenheit. Vor zwei Jahren begannen wir ihn mit der Band zu spielen und er passt gut in den Mountain Jumper Zyklus. Das ganze Album steckt voller Zitate aus meinem Leben.

So in any one song the instruments of a european settler in a covered wagon heading to the west coast can be heard along with the chinese workers of the transcontinental railroad. The pipa and the ehru (the chinese lute and violin) blends with a greek bouzouki, slide guitar and banjo with oriental strings.

On the mic is Alexander Leuschner aka Alix. Born in 1988 and a native of Berlin’s Neukölln suburb, he’s been rapping using various vocal styles from a young age. Rhythmically refined he he bounces on the verses, thoughtfully and humorously talking about life and his visions. Together with [dunkelbunt] he shares his adopted home of Vienna and a passion for merging different musical styles.
Ulf Lindemann aka [dunkelbunt] was born in Hamburg in 1979. At the beginning of the millennium in his Vienna studio, he began to merge electronic music with Balkan, Gypsy and Swing sounds and along with his contemporaries like Waldeck, Parov Stelar and Shantel who helped popularize the new music genres, „Electro Swing“ and „Balkan Beats“.

Nach längerer Wartezeit legt Waldeck seinen mit Spannung erwarteten vierten Longplayer “Rio Grande” vor… Und soviel vorweg: Das Warten hat sich gelohnt. Der Titel ist Programm: Zwar klingen in “Rio Grande” noch Elemente des über 100.000-fach verkauften Vorgängeralbum “Ballroom Stories” nach, doch die Reise geht in das Grenzgebiet des Rio Grande, dort wo sich Western Style, Blues, Dub und karibische Elemente die Hand reichen. Begleitet wird Waldeck dabei von seinen kongenialen Sängerinnen, der aus den Westindies stammenden Joy Malcolm (zuletzt unterwegs mit Moby) und der Vorarlbergerin Zeebee. Waldecks Sound wirkt auf “Rio Grande” pur und befreit von ornamentaler Elektronik. Uns erwarten bluesige Gesänge, schmachtende Trompeten, Lagerfeuerromantik und obszöne Tanzeinlagen in verruchten Saloons. John Wayne trifft auch El Mariachi. “Hugh” der große Waldeck hat gesprochen!

“There’s one thing that we will never do together, and that’s make music!“ – „I can still hear myself saying that to Alix. That was about a year ago when we met up for the first time at the Wiener Augarten”, explains Mr. [dunkelbunt] telling the story of how his latest collaboration with the singer ALIX was born.
Last summer, Alexander Leuschner, born in Berlin, applied to [dunkelbunt] for an internship and although it had been made clear in the job description that the position did not incorporate making music but focused on the ins and outs of how a label operates he still sent in one of his songs along with a wonderfully brash application letter.
“When I listened to it I immediately felt like I’d met my musical soul mate and that was the reason I had to ring him to arrange that meeting at Augarten. Then after a few days of checking each other out we decided to make music together.” „Es ist egal, wo Du herkommst und auch egal wohin Du gehst, solang’ Du nur dem Weg Deines Herzens folgst und dafür gerade stehst….“ (“It doesn’t matter where you come from or where you’re going as long as you follow your heart and stand with pride…”) that was the first of his contributions that burrowed it’s way into my head, a chorus that Alix wrote over the [dunkelbunt] Riddim Schlawiener, more or less as an acid test. A few weeks later he was standing with us on stage at the National Tennis Center Bratislava and now I couldn’t imagine [dunkelbunt] & Secret Swing Society without him.”
The first fruits of this collaboration will be released this summer with Augen zu und durch and Süßwasser Salzwasser the lyrics as the titles suggest are in German, “We inspire each other equally. My music is a homage to him and his lyrics are a homage to me which is both beautiful and liberating.” says Mr [dunkelbunt]. “With that foundation we decided to make an album together and the first release is the track Boomeræng, incorporating rap, vocals and swinging hip hop beats, using oriental and western instrumentation with a urban and nostalgic flair.” The finishing touch comes in suaheli from the kenian singer Cloud Tissa, who collaborates with [dunkelbunt] for years: Kebab Connection, Balkan Qoulou, Give You Action – East Africa meets the Middle East. The Boomeræng Club Version was remixed by the austrian „Electro Brass Collective“ Erwin & Edwin.

Together with every EP or LP released, [dunkelbunt] creates a special spice blend which is included with the CD or album and at concerts the air is filled with his special fragrances. With a cinnamon wand or with aromatic oil massaging the senses of his audience they are taken on a fantastic trip to the orient or through tropical forests and fields of flowers or to his second home in the Spanish Orange blossom valleys.

“My passion is creating beats. Not necessarily in the studio but in more magical places, a log cabin hidden between snow capped mountain tops, with a warm cockle stove and a picture postcard view of the magical winter wonderland lying outside. In an aeroplane flying 12,000 meters over the Mediterranean sea towards Tel Aviv, on a farm in the evening after the olive harvest or somewhere in Andalusia in the valleys of almond blossoms.
The finishing touches and subtle flavors are then added in my studio in Vienna with my spice laden effectsboard and sub end. My studio is also the space where I create my blend of „mixed spices“. There are always lots of various herbs and spices to be found, from aniseed to z’atar which gives this space an intoxicating fragrance and allure. Normally I work parallel with three „non materials“, sound, smell and taste. Constantly moving back and forth, between a mortar & pestle, synthesizers, a wooden spoon and the mixing desk, alternating between blocking my ears, closing my mouth and blocking my nose in an attempt to find the fragrance emanating from the pictures of my fantasy, to paint with sounds and music, and taste and smell the melodies.
Everything breaks down into frequencies and aligns itself towards the golden rule. I know it sounds crazy but it’s just a part of my day to day: alchemy in the [dunkelbunt] Studio. Often my daughters enter my „soundkitchen“ and remix the settings on my analogue synth, record over sounds and announce that my wobble bass purrs like a kitten….what more could I ask for?”
The title track „Ich grill mir Dir die Abendsonne“ (With you I’ll grill the evening sun) is a homage to the Mediterranean, We sail into the setting sun onboard a spice freighter filled with beats and bass, a greek bouzouki, accordion and balkan violin, flamenco guitars, Arabic saz and a Turkish Oud…
During the making of this EP numerous attractive collaborations emerged, the title „Augen zu und durch“ is the starting point for the new [dunkelbunt] album „Boomerang“, where I will be recording with the Berlin rapper and singer „Alexander Leuschner“ aka Alix and instrumentally supported by the viennese band „Barefoot Basement“. One week before the end of recording for this EP I was contacted by the soul ‘n’ funk singer Lee Anduze from Los Angeles (who has worked with Parov Stelar among others). Based on „Augen zu und durch“, Anduze wrote the lyrics for „Smoking Gun“ and hunted me down from across the pond so that we could work on some new beats at his place in L.A. during my US tour in September.
On top of that we have two remixes on board, Boban I Marko Markovic Orkestra’s „Šljivovica“ and Savages Y Suefo’s “Ballroom Breakers” both dressed in [dunkelbunt]-Wobblebass-Balkan-Swing-Costume.
